Planning

Planning of lightning protection systems (external lightning protection and internal lightning protection).

In order to be able to install a lightning protection system in accordance with the currently applicable standards, directives and regulations or the currently recognised state of the art, comprehensive planning must be carried out in advance of a new construction project or, if necessary, for the change of use of an existing system. This is the only way to ensure an economically and technically optimised solution.
Without detailed planning and, if necessary, inspections during construction, lightning protection systems can often not be implemented at all or only at considerable expense.

A detailed, comprehensive plan essentially consists of the following steps

Risk assessment according to DIN EN 62305 T2 (VDE 0185-305 T2) with determination of the applicable lightning protection class

  • Recording the structural parameters (length, width, height)
  • Recording the building specification (steel-skeleton construction, reinforced concrete construction, solid construction, etc.)
  • Recording of special parameters of the building system (Explosion protection systems / zones, PV systems, etc.)
  • Recording of system parts requiring special protection, components of the structural system (server rooms, control rooms, etc.)
  • Economic consideration (costs of the structural system, amortisation period, costs of lightning protection measures)

Creation of a lightning protection concept based on the determined parameters after risk assessment

  • Description of the building
  • Definition of the protection objective of the lightning protection system to be installed
  • Parameters of the lightning protection system (lightning protection class, mesh widths, protection angle, number of down conductors, etc.)
  • Calculations of separation distances, minimum earth electrode lengths, etc.
  • Design of the required grounding measures (foundation earth electrodes, ring earth electrodes, combined grounding systems) taking into account special structural features, such as white tank (watertight concrete), black tank (perimeter insulation)
  • Creation of a potential equalisation concept and lightning protection potential equalisation concept
  • Creation of a surge protection concept in accordance with DIN EN 62305 T4 (VDE 0185-305 Part 4)

Preparation of implementation planning (plan presentation, CAD drawing)

  • 2D drawing showing the grounding system, interception system, down conductor, equipotential bonding, disconnection points
  • 3D drawing showing the lightning sphere view (definition of protected areas) for positioning interception rods and interception bends
  • Preparation of detailed planning for the visualisation of individual components of the lightning protection system to be installed

3D scan – advantages of a digital measurement

  • Recordings of existing situation
  • Manual measurement is a time-consuming and error-prone process
  • 3D scatter plot is the basis for a three-dimensional evaluation
  • Can also be used on higher accessible structures thanks to easy handling
  • Due to high tripods (7m) even higher non-accessible buildings can be measured
  • A panoramic photo is created directly
